Root Canal Therapy
Pebble Hills Dental Care provides endodontic therapy, also known as root canal therapy, to preserve and retain teeth that have been affected by dental abscesses, cracked roots, past trauma, or deep decay. While most restorative treatments repair the outside of teeth, root canal therapy treats your tooth from the inside.
In the past, root canals have been synonymous with extreme pain. But thanks to our leading-edge dental technology and highly-trained dentist and staff, our patients experience little to no discomfort during their treatment!
Do I Need a Root Canal?
To determine if you need a root canal, you will need a comprehensive exam where our dentist will perform various tests to see how your tooth responds. This may include applying manual pressure or air pressure to pinpoint the exact area of damage. On your X-ray, we’ll be able to see if the nerve is showing signs of necrosis or infection. If it is, and we don’t treat the tooth, it will gradually resorb (shrink away) and require an extraction later on.
Instead, our doctor is able to treat your tooth endodontically, so that the remaining structure is preserved and can function for many more years to come!
What Happens During a Root Canal?
During your visit to our El Paso dental office, we’ll be sure to thoroughly numb the tooth that is being worked on. If you are feeling uneasy about the procedure, you can elect to have a light sedative, such as laughing gas, to help calm your nerves.
Next, a “canal” is created through the top of your tooth and into the gum to remove the diseased nerve tissue inside. Finally, the nerve chambers are cleaned and sealed off, preventing reinfection. After your root canal treatment, we will place a crown over the tooth so that the non-vital enamel doesn’t easily chip away with everyday use.
